After three decades researching human hope and happiness, I discovered a method you can use to measure your happiness. It's based on this simple equation: Hope ÷ Hunger = Happiness This math formula — hope divided by hunger equals happiness — says that the more hopeful and less hungry you are, the happier you become. If you're flourishing, on the other hand, it means you're happy, full of hope, and functioning well emotionally and socially. So if you can confidently make these six statements, you're flourishing — living a happier, more hopeful life than most people:1. When you have something to contribute, it means you're a consequential member of the community.

Parents are feeling lonely. Here’s why it matters

CNN —Despite working a full-time job in human relations and caring for her 6-year-old son Chase and 3-year-old daughter Millie, Anne Helmes often feels isolated and lonely. In fact, 66% of 1,005 surveyed parents felt the demands of parenthood sometimes or frequently left them feeling isolated and lonely, while nearly 40% felt as if they have no one to support them in their parenting role. “When parents are feeling lonely and isolated, that tells me their adult needs aren’t being met because they’re pouring what they can into their child. By definition, burnout is an overwhelming feeling of exhaustion, Gawlik said. “Burnout is not new for parents, but I think the pandemic took it to a totally different level,” she added.

Opinion: Why gardens and poems rhyme
  + stars: | 2024-04-22 | by ( Opinion Tess Taylor | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
This year, particularly, I’ve been meditating on the fact that gardens and poems share critical, linked invitations. And because even as the planet warms, gardens and poems help cool us off, practically and emotionally. I don’t think I’m overstating the case to say that time spent with poems and gardens build pathways that actually repair us. In their own small plots, poems build diverse networks as well: Sinking into the rhythms and pleasures of literature stimulates the parts of our brains attuned to empathy, helping us build attention, kindness, compassion, regard. Gardens and poems invite that kind of dwelling.

In recent weeks, the Belgorod region has been subject to almost daily shelling and drone attacks. Russian authorities blame Ukraine and report having repelled the attacks, while also admitting destruction and casualties caused by them. The Belgorod region has borne the brunt of the war compared to more distant Russian regions, which have been relatively untouched. The governor of Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said on March 23 that 24 people had been killed and 152 injured in the span of less than two weeks. Following a major air attack on Ukraine by Russia overnight into December 29, Kyiv retaliated a day later by targeting the Belgorod region.

Office crushes, in all their mercurial glory and pain, continue to shape our working lives in deeply meaningful ways. But through all these changing norms, workplace crushes remain remarkably common. Jim, after all, doesn't even ask Pam on a date until the season-three finale of "The Office." That most workplace crushes never lead to consummated relationships doesn't make them any less powerful. CNN —A “clearly audible” racial slur was directed at the Utah women’s basketball team ahead of the NCAA tournament, police said on Wednesday. Utah was staying at a hotel in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho ahead of their opening March Madness game when the incidents took place last month and left the players “deeply troubled and shaken,” according to team officials. Coeur d’Alene police have been investigating the racist abuse and now say that they have “collected approximately 35 hours of video” from businesses in the area. “Some of the surveillance video/audio corroborates what was reported by members of the basketball program and detectives are currently working to locate any additional evidence,” said Sergeant Jared Reneau of the Coeur d’Alene police department. “We’ve identified an audio recording where the use of a racial slur was clearly audible.

The project, known as Direct File and launched by the IRS on a limited basis in 12 states this tax season, is in its pilot phase. Derek Wheeler, director of the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic at the University of Florida’s Law School, said his clinic has referred less than a dozen clients to the Direct File system. His legal clinic has partnered with the IRS and selectively identifies clients who may be eligible to submit their taxes through the program. One of their biggest criticisms is that free tax prep services already exist for people of all income brackets and developing the Direct File system will end up costing taxpayers billions of dollars. But after using Direct File, she said, “I feel foolish for paying all that money every year.”

Not long after founding the startup, Gaon shared his vision with famed venture capitalist Marc Andreessen. It was notable to Gaon at the time that Andreessen — "one of those investors who's known for seeing where the market is going" — appeared to have pinpointed loneliness as its own market. That moved her parents, Cindy and Anne Jordan, who had sold their first healthtech company years before, to found the Arizona company Pyx Health. "The loneliness crisis is bigger, and more urgent, than anything I've worked on before," Nyborg wrote in a blog post. Inspired debuted a thesis in 2020 that identified loneliness as a key focus for the firm to invest in.

Making mistakes doesn't feel great, but they can provide some lessons you might not have learned otherwise. We asked this year's rising stars of Wall Street to open up about the biggest missteps of their careers so far and what they took away from them. Some shared their rookie errors — like slamming their laptop shut after forgetting to save their first big pitch deck or duplicating a trade — while others gave more reflective answers about how early career mistakes impacted their paths. We've got to iterate and change how we do things, and I think that's helped our team's process a lot. So my mistakes also brought me here, and everything that has been a mistake is always a learning experience.
